Power 90 - Day 11

Day 11 comes up later tonight…and I can not wait!  My knees are a little bit sore, but I think that is just more or less being tired.  They feel nothing like the previous injuries.  They feel a little bit more on the achy side, rather than the hurting side of things.  I will keep an eye on it, but I am not to worried about it.  I will try and roll the legs out with a foam roller tonight after I complete Day 11 Sweat 1-2.
Other than that…not much is happening with regards to fitness.  The rainy season is here now in British Columbia…and the current bike that I have (my piece of crap Canadian Tire Road Bike) is not really set up for that type of weather.  I make that comment on Twitter the other day, and Mel (from http://www.melanieryding.co.uk ) sent me a message asking why the rain stopped me from ridding.  I replied back that I did not have the proper clothing (rain wear) and my bike did not have fenders.  Her comment stuck with me over the weekend…and it really started to bother me.  I could not get it out of my head.  Why was the rain holding me back?  I choose to live in British Columbia and the weather here is suspect at the best of time during the winter season.  We get lots of rain during the winter months, and some times…some times get lots of snow.  This is my decision…so why is the weather affecting my training decisions?  Am I not serious about getting healthy and fit?  I think that I am…so what should I do?  I went out and picked up a low end (piece of crap) mountain bike with fenders.  As for rain wear…do I really need that to ride?  I will not melt in the rain…I think that I can survive getting out their and get fit.  I have clothing that I can layer with to stay warm.
Anyways…thank you Mel for questioning me…and making me rethink what I was saying.  I really…really appreciate the fact that there are people out their listening…
I have not started the running program yet, and I think that is because I am still nervous about getting hurt.  Now that I have the bike for riding in the rain, I think that a little cycling cross training to get the knees moving will be a great thing.
So…here is to getting soggy…and seeing you out their!
Tribork…out…

One more kick at the can...

Just like that old Whitesnake song…”Here we go again on my own…” it is time for me to take that next step and get moving towards a fitter and healthier lifestyle.
Over the past year, I have learned a lot about myself, and about my body.  The biggest information gain is that I am injury prone.  I am not that young and fit kid that could do anything in my teens and twenties.  I am older…and far from fit and healthy.  So, what can I do with that information?
The first thing that I need to do is re-evaluate my training plans to make sure that they are going to work for me.  And the first step in that is to start slower.  Just putting on the running shoes and getting out running…does not work for me.  If I do that again, I might as well just hang up the shoes and forget it.  I will be back on the sidelines again in no time.
The first step is going to be getting out walking more, first shorter distances, then work up to longer distances.  Then, incorporate walking for 10 mins, and running for 1 min 3x a week.  After that, evaluate how my body feels.  How are my knees?  How is my foot?  One thing that I might try is to get some knee braces to wear when training.  I have one from Zensah, so I might see about picking up one more.  Just to give the knee some stability…and maybe give me some mental relief…if you can understand what I am meaning by that! Lol!
I just need to make this statement though, to let you all know…I am not at all happy with having to start slowly.  I just want to wake up and go running.  I feel that I should be able to do this.  I want to do this…but what I want more now, is to succeed and achieve my goals.  I really need this to work.  It just has to work.  I really need to slow my brain down…and let my body catch up.  – Thanks for listening to my little rant here…
My official start date for the Power 90 training program was Saturday the 16th of October.  Day 1 was the strength portion of the program and it went off with out a hitch.  Done deal!  It really felt good to get started!  Day 2 was Sunday and was the Cardio session.  Again, it felt great to get it out of the way…but to be honest…I did not do the program at a full pace.  Today is day 5 of the Power 90 program...and so far...so good.  For the most part, I have been taking it light, not wanting to risk an early injury.  Who am I kidding...I don't want to risk any injuries.
As for my diet, it has been relatively good over the past several weeks.  I have not gained anything back, and have been consistent at a weight of 250 lbs (at least I had not gained weight back before the other nights dinner of pizza).  For me, that is a good thing, not gaining my weight back.  I have been eating healthier (other than last night’s pizza) but there is so much more that I can do.  Many more little changes that I can make to assist me achieving my goals.  The plan is to eat more fruits and veggies during the day while working, and have healthier clean eating meals at dinner time.  I am not planning on going vegetarian/vegan, but I am planning on eating clean.
I have discovered that there is an organic grocery store with in a 5 min drive to my house.  2 of them in fact.  One is a full grocery store – Roots Natural Organic Foods.  The other one is Organic World, which is more of a butcher type of shop. Now that they have moved across the street to a bigger location, they have much more to offer.  Inside they have a little bistro restaurant, a deli, a butcher shop as well as ready to cook frozen meals.  The store offers so much more than they used to, and gives the public so much more to choose from.
One of the nice things about these two stores is that they are a 5 min drive from the house.  Now…that means that they are a 10-15 min bike ride from the house.  I need to start taking the bike out more, and using it instead of the car.  That is a whole other issue that we deal with in another blog post.
Back on track here…the main thing for me is not only get started on this journey, but to start slowly.  I know that I can do this.  I know that I can make this happen.  I will get their…one foot in front of the other…
